Procalcitonin (PCT) is a widely used biomarker for the diagnosis of bacterial infections.1 It is produced by thyroid C cells, with very low concentration (< 0.05 ng/mL) in the blood of healthy individuals under normal physical conditions.2 During an inflammatory response, however, and especially those induced by bacterial infections, various tissues and cells can produce and release PCT into the bloodstream. Serum PCT level increases during bacterial infections but usually remains low during viral infections and nonspecific inflammatory diseases. As such, serum PCT is recognized to be an important biomarker for bacterial infections.
